HotBox Studios Online Services

HotBox Studios Online Services

HotBox Studios is in the process of upgrading the company's IT infrastructure. In mid-March we're installing three new servers and additional security hardware within our new UK based data centre. Until now HotBox Studios has provided online services via hardware based in Germany. Due to the number of websites we run and the popularity of the PAAM software HotBox Studios released in 2007 - we've been pushing the limits of the older technology.

The new systems will separate the databases and number crunching from the viewing and interaction with websites.

The new systems will also include a mirrored set-up meaning one of the two front end web servers could fail without any interruption to websites or on-line services and with no loss of data. This setup also allowing us to make critical updates again without any interruption to websites or on-line services.

As far as what this will mean for our client's - websites, on-line software and services will be faster, more reliable and more secure.

This new technology will be installed at an initial cost of around fifteen thousand pounds, housing the new systems within a UK data centre will also substantially increase HotBox Studios annual online services costs. Although, we see providing state-of-the-art backend technology as our responsibility thus do not currently* plan to pass on these costs to our clients by increasing current HotBox Studios' client's online services costs**.

There will be a four week transfer period; mid-March to mid-April; when we will be moving all currently on the German server to the new UK servers. This should cause no interruption of service.

Any questions please get in touch.

*HotBox Studios Ltd reserves the right to change prices without prior notice. **HotBox Studios Ltd clients' websites that run an SSL will now require two; doubling current annual SSL license fees - this does not apply to clients that run PAAM systems.

Shirazeh Houshiary with the assistance of Mark Hatchard from HotBox Studios has created an animation which will be presented at the forthcoming exhibition of her works at the Lisson Gallery. Please find further details below.

PRESS RELEASE - 20th MARCH 2008

Shirazeh Houshiary: New Work29 May - 26 July 200829 Bell Street

Lisson Gallery is delighted to announce an exhibition of new work by Shirazeh Houshiary. The exhibition will include previously unseen large scale canvases, smaller paintings and sculpture. Also on display will be Houshiary's first film-based work shown on a LCD screen.

For this exhibition Houshiary has created seven new large-scale paintings. Executed on either black or white monochromatic canvas the delicate markings of her pencil are elusive and change in our vision over time. Each mark represents a word, the meaning of which remains unknown. These meticulous pencil traces create a second surface layer, contrasting with the solid aquacryl background. This new layer hovers in front of our eyes, at the very edge of perception, like a floating veil.

The exhibition will also include a new body of towers conceived in collaboration with the architect Pip Horne. Undoing the Knot, 2008, is a six-and-a-half-metre sculptural tower made of anodised blue aluminium. It will be exhibited on Lisson Gallery's new outdoor sculpture area. Two smaller towers, one pink, one turquoise, measuring just under three metres, will stand inside the gallery.

Further works on display will include a new computer animated film entitled Shroud, 2007, shown on a 53 inch LCD screen. The abstract theme of the film is based on two of Houshiary's paintings and places itself between form and formlessness, presence and invisibility. Shroud, 2007 was conceived with the assistance of Mark Hatchard at Hotbox Studios.

Shirazeh Houshiary was born in Shiraz, Iran and has lived and worked in London since the mid-1970s. She studied at Chelsea School of Art and has been awarded Professorship at the London Institute. She was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1994. Her work can be found in major public collections worldwide including MOMA, New York; Guggenheim, New York; The British Council Collection, London, and The Museum of Contemporary Art in Prato, Italy. Houshiary's work formed a key part of MOMA's 2006 exhibition Without Boundary: Seventeen Ways of Looking, curated by Fereshteh Daftari. Recent projects include Bloom, 2006, a six-metre tower permanently installed in Midtown Tokyo. Over the past year Houshiary has worked on a new East window for St Martin-in-the-Fields, which will be unveiled in late April 2008. The minimal design will add light to the famous church and is one of the most significant pieces of religious art commissioned in London in recent years. Both these projects were realised in collaboration with the architect Pip Horne.

On the occasion of this exhibition, Lisson Gallery is publishing a catalogue with an essay by Mel Gooding.

The new DC Site Services (DCSS) website is now live! DCSS is one of the UKs largest providers of staff to music festivals and live events. DCSS employs roughly two thousand staff per season - safety stewards, traffic marshals, recycling and litter teams - to a wide variety of events.

The DCSS website is also home to over a thousand volunteers - Campsite Assistance Teams (CATs) and Helpful Arena Teams (HATs) - run by Festival Republic at the Reading Festival, Leeds Festival, and Latitude Festival.

The first build of the DCSS website was produced by HotBox Studios back in 2001 - then HotBox Productions. Since 2001 HotBox Studios has worked closely with DCSS and Festival Republic - developing the website and online services. The website aids both DCSS and Festival Republic with recruitment, administration, and keeps everyone who works with the company as up to date as possible throughout the festival and live event season.

HotBox Studios has also setup an online implementation of the PAAM software package which works hand-in-hand with the DCSS website.
